A lightning strike was blamed for a fire that heavily damaged a home in a Guilderland subdivision. The fire at 6285 Empire Ave. began shortly before 3 p.m., igniting the home's attached garage. No one was reported injured, but Chief Bob Dagnotti of the Fort Hunter Fire Department said the garage was a complete loss and will probably have to be torn down. Part of the home may also have to be demolished, he said. Dagnotti said two people were inside the home when lightning struck. He said power was knocked out but the home's occupants were initially not aware that a fire had begun. They then smelled smoke and got out before the fire spread. During the blaze, thick smoke could be seen coming from a large hole in the garage roof. A firefighter battled the inferno from a ladder about 25 feet into the air. The fire was completely under control by 6 p.m. |
